Today’s Spotlight – US Alien Draft Registrations
Today’s spotlight is on the US Alien Draft Registrations. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of records in this collection yet, 6,294, but what is there is extremely valuable. Be sure to page through the records to see all the information, as the application is 5 pages long!
It gives the individual’s full name, address at the time of the record, where they have lived during the last 5 years, marital status, description, citizenship status (or lack thereof), when and where they arrived in the US, and birth date, as well as their parents/spouse/children/siblings’ names, birth information, and where they live. (If your ancestor was nice enough to fill all of that out.)
I searched for a few surnames, couldn’t find any of mine, so looked for Smith and found the record for Frank Dunstan Smith, MD. Interesting guy! He was a doctor, seems he came to the US just a couple months previously to work at Tulane University. His parents are listed, though it seems he didn’t have any other family members:
A 34 year old single doctor…I hope he found what he was looking for by coming to the US!
I don’t have any ancestors who came over to the US recently enough to be in these files, but seeing this makes me wish I had…
