Odds & Ends: New records for England, Ireland, and the United States

Jun 26, 13 Odds & Ends: New records for England, Ireland, and the United States

England

  • Lichfield Consistory Court Wills 1650-1700 was added to the National Wills Index on Origins.net. This includes over 28,000 wills and testamentary documents from the counties of Staffordshire, Derbyshire, north Shropshire, and north Warwickshire. From the website: “This index…includes names of testator / testatrix, occupation and place of abode, which will help you to locate the original document at Lichfield Record Office.”
  • An additional 140,000 Brompton Cemetery records have been added to that database on Deceased Online. See the original post on this collection.

Ireland

  • Sometimes letting you know as soon as possible about a new record collection means I post earlier than the company’s own press releases, which could be a good or a bad thing. We announced findmypast’s new Ireland Petty Sessions records here, then a few days later, they posted about the collection with some interesting tidbits and details on the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australian blogs.  ”Being drunk in a public place, being drunk in charge of a cart, failure to pay rent and allowing livestock to wander on the road are among some of the most common misdemeanors that Ireland’s most mischievous residents found themselves in court for.”

United States

  • My Genealogy Hound added biographies from Johnson & Woodruff Counties, Arkansas; Perry County, Indiana; Warren County, Iowa (complete); Shawnee County, Kansas; Cole & Osage Counties, Missouri; Darke County, Ohio; and White County, Tennessee. Maps have been added for Sedgwick County, Kansas (1887 township map), Newton County, Missouri (from 1861-1904), and Tennessee (there is now a map for every county in Tennessee).
  • Michigan death record index resources were added to DeathIndexes.com. Read more here.
  • The North Carolina Historical Review is now available online. Read more here.
Thanks to the GenealogyBlog for the heads up.
  • For you historical buffs, this may be old news to you now but a new website, the Founders Online, has been created for the correspondence and other writings of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams (and family), Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison. It includes over 119,000 searchable documents. Searchable is great, but in looking through a few of them, I found myself wishing I could also see the original images. Is that the curse of the genealogist, to never feel settled with the typewritten word?

FamilySearch.org: Updates in Netherlands, United States, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Portugal, and more

Jun 17, 13 FamilySearch.org: Updates in Netherlands, United States, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Portugal, and more

FamilySearch added to or updated many collections during the last three weeks.

Before I share the list, you might be wondering, why are my lists different from the ones FamilySearch sends out? Well, rather than wait for the FamilySearch press releases, I go in every Monday and take a look at what they have posted during the week. Then I tag the post with the locations of the updates; that way, if you are only following the locations you are researching in, you will only see updates for those areas, and not for everywhere. I also hope it’s helpful that the collection is linked to directly from this page.

And now for the list – most of these are “browsable only” collections, meaning you get to look through the film images to see what’s there. Yes, it takes a while to go through the images. But imagine being able to see it today, rather than having to order a film, wait for a few weeks to get the film, traveling to the family history center to view the film, and then still going through it page by page:
